The Benchmark for Sierra de Gredos
Dani Landi and Fernando García of Comando G have put the region of Sierra de Gredos on the map as one of the finest wine regions in all of Spain.
Gredos is defined by old, head-trained garnacha vines planted at high altitudes. To understand Gredos is to understand garnacha.
Dani and Fer have worked tirelessly over the years to define the region and identify the best vineyards. Inspired by the Burgundian model, the duo have developed their own hierarchy for the sites they farm in Gredos from appellation level all the way up to Grand Cru.
Below is a guide to the rankings of Comando G wines and insights into what makes these garnachas some of the most compelling, site-specific wines on the planet.

La Bruja
Cebreros DOP
‘La Bruja’ is the entry-point to the Comando G lineup and a perfect introduction to the house expression of Gredos terruño. It is a bottling that has transformed over the years as the source of fruit for the bottling has changed. The vines are on average 60 years old and planted at 1000 meters in elevation. The fruit is hand harvested, fermented in open-top oak vats, and aged for 8 months in 15-60hl oak foudre.
Navatalgordo
Cebreros DOP
The village of Navatalgordo is located at the western end of the Cebreros DOP. It is home to several 1er Cru and Grand Cru parcels, including Peña la Mora and El Tamboril. Vineyards here have white sandy soils and a higher proportion of quartz. Wines from Navatalgordo are long-lived as bright acidity and firm tannins frame the fruit. The ‘Navatalgordo’ village bottling is the most open-knit expression of the area. Sourced from three parcels of 50-80 year-old vines planted at 1,050 meters, the fruit is fermented with a portion of whole clusters and aged for 12 months in French oak vats.
Las Umbrías
Vinos de Madrid DO
‘Las Umbrías’ is the Grand Cru parcel from Rozas de Puerto Real in the Vinos de Madrid DO. The village is located centrally in the Sierra de Gredos near where the three DOs of the region meet. ‘Las Umbrías’ is distinctive for having a pale color that belies the concentration of flavors and aromas therein. The vineyard has streaks of clay mixed with the granite soils, lending the development of intense fruit flavors and sweeter, riper tannins. The vines are 60+ years old, the fruit macerates for 60 days during fermentation, and the wine is aged for 14 months in 14hl foudre.
Las Iruelas
Cebreros DOP
Located at the village of El Tiemblo, ‘Las Iruelas’ is a Grand Cru vineyard that shares its name with the Garganta de Iruelas, a river which flows nearby. The only wine Comando G makes from El Tiemblo, Dani Landi had farmed ‘Las Iruelas’ for years under his personal label. ‘Las Iruelas’ boasts some of the most complex soils in the lineup: a blend of slate, granite, sand, and quartz. This site also has a northerly exposure, which at 1000 meters in elevation lends peppery, floral, spicy characteristics to the wine reminiscent of Northern Rhône Syrah. The fruit from the 70-75+ year-old vines is fermented whole-cluster, foot-tread, and macerated over the course of two months. The wine is then aged for 16 months in 500L puncheons and concrete tanks of various sizes.
El Tamboril
Cebreros DOP
‘El Tamboril’, from the village of Navatalgordo, is notable for being the only vineyard where Comando G makes a Grand Cru white wine. A very high altitude site at 1200 meters, a section of the vineyard is planted to garnacha blanca and garnacha gris on sandy quartz and sandstone soils. The tiny yields from this section of white varieties is hand harvested, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented in a small oak vat. ‘El Tamboril’ Blanco is then aged for 14 months in a 220L demijohn. Only a minuscule 400-800 bottles are produced every year. ‘El Tamboril’ Tinto is typically harvested in October, but maintains very moderate alcohol levels due to the elevation of the site. Yields are extremely small from this old-vine parcel of less than a half hectare. The fruit is fermented whole-cluster for 60-65 days and aged 14 months in 10hl oak foudre. Wines from El Tamboril are some of the rarest in the lineup.

Tumba del Rey Moro
Cebreros DOP
Located around the village of Villanueva de Ávila, ‘Tumba del Rey Moro’ is a Grand Cru site that shares a village with Comando G’s other crown jewel — ‘Rumbo al Norte’. The soils at ‘Tumba del Rey Moro’ are distinctive as the weathered, pebbly sands of the worn granite bedrock are laced with pink granite. The vineyard itself was long forgotten and the ancient terraces struggle to cling to the steep hillside. Dani and Fer worked hard to discover the location and clear a path to the site so they could farm it. The fruit from this one-of-a-kind vineyard ferments for 60-65 days in open-top vats and produces a pale, intense wine that ages for 14 months in 16hl foudre. The wines from Tumba del Rey Moro and Villanueva de Ávila represent the pinnacle of their production.
